I was a lawyer living in New York City when I became pregnant with my first child. When he had just turned 1, we moved to the suburbs of Philadelphia, where I began the search for the ideal job that would allow me to perfectly balance (and control ) my work and family life. HA! Children have a way of landing you smack in the middle of moments you not have imagined and can't control. I discovered that many others were navigating the same terrain, and found that our ideas about the 'perfect existence' were all evolving in an unexpectedly wonderful way.
Reinventing Ourselves After Motherhood interweaves the stories of these women with my own, with one crazy essay thrown in the mix. I still don't know how "Metamorphin Time" got past my editors.
Books on Family Life
This collection of essays tracking parenthood, children, and growth was years in the making. After my education and training as a lawyer, where I learned to prepare thoroughly and avoid surprises, plunging into the often chaotic world of growing children -- who live in the moment, and are surprisingly inventive in unexpected ways -- was both intimidating and exhilarating. Many of these columns appeared in Parents Express and Philadelphia Magazine. I am ever grateful to everyone in my extended and nuclear family for being who you are - not just great material (well, there is that) but truly wonderful friends who help me appreciate the many dimensions of this life.
